Banaag At Sikat Ni Lope K.santos(buong Nobela).254

Banaag at Sikat ni Lope K.Santos, 254 is a story written by Filipino novelist Lope K. Santos in the early 1900s. It is about an ordinary man who gets to travel through space and time to different parts of the universe, all while still being bound by his physical laws because he can't be in two places at one time. The lessons that he learns are golden ones that you will want to take with you through your own travels through life—this book, or any for that matter, should never be far from reach. Remember: “we are not where we stand; we are where we find ourselves standing” (254). In an effort to create more credible characters, Santos used elements of social realism in his narrative. In In what may have been a parody of common beliefs of the time, Santos wrote a character named Corazon Dimalanta, who was a beautiful maiden with a heart—literally. Her heart had been surgically extracted from her body and was being kept alive by being placed in a vase of water. She was so beautiful that several men proposed to her, but she refused all their proposals as she still loved her fiancé, Pedring. One day, as she sat singing beside the window, she noticed someone staring at her from afar—it was Labang. He had been passing by and he stopped to admire her beauty. He wanted to be near her, so he asked a friend of his, a barber named Valentin, to help him. Labang was given the job of putting up signboards at the end of the street where Dimalanta lived. In his spare time, he would watch Dimalanta from afar. Dimalanta felt someone watching her but she couldn’t see anyone so she dismissed it as her imagination. But one day, when she was taking a bath, her heart started to beat erratically. Lilibang had placed his hands on the vase of water that held her heart and it began to beat wildly. She gasped in fright but then she realized that it wasn’t her imagination because there really was someone watching her. She wanted to get out of the vase but the water was too deep. She decided to put on some clothes so she could escape. But as she got ready to leave the vase, she saw that it was Lilibang! She panicked and decided to just stay where she was. Lilibang managed to get her heart back into her body, but as he put it back in, his hand accidentally hit the vase and shattered it. Dimalanta felt as though she would die as she felt the water start to enter her body. But then, a small fish swam by and he breathed life into it and she lived. The moral of this story: Don’t be afraid to look strangers in the eye because you might be surprised yet pleased by who you will see (254).
